Talking or Staying Quiet During a Massage: What’s Better?

There isn’t one “right” answer. It depends on what you need from your massage session and how you feel in the moment.

Sometimes, during a therapeutic massage, the best way to relax is to go inward: slow down, disconnect from everyday worries, and stay quiet. Silence often helps the nervous system settle, making it easier to notice your breathing, your body, and how tension gradually releases.

But relaxation can also happen while staying connected. Many clients at a massage clinic feel more comfortable when they talk. A light conversation with the massage therapist can help reduce emotional stress, shift attention away from problems, and create a sense of safety.

Both approaches work. An experienced massage therapist understands this and supports whichever option feels right for you.

How do you decide? Simply follow your needs.
If you feel like talking — talk.
If you feel like being quiet — stay quiet.

And you can change your mind at any point during the massage.

In my massage clinic, you’re never expected to behave in one specific way. You stay in control of your therapeutic massage session — not only when it comes to talking or remaining quiet, but also with regard to lighting, music, temperature, pressure, pace, and the areas we focus on. Tell me what you need, and the massage adapts to you.
