Many massage clinics talk about an individual approach, but rarely explain what it actually means. In practice, it often comes down to a standard massage therapy session with a few adjustments based on where the client reports discomfort.
That doesn’t necessarily make it a bad massage. However, calling it individual raises an obvious question: What exactly is “individualized”?
In my clinic, an individual approach has a specific meaning. It follows a structured process with a defined sequence of steps. Each step has a specific purpose, and together they help create a massage that is as comfortable and enjoyable for you as possible. As a registered massage therapist providing massage therapy in my clinic in Calgary SE, this is the process I use with every client.
Your Reason for Coming
Every massage begins with a clear understanding of why you came.
Your reason for coming is always the starting point. The session is built around your current concern and the goal you want to achieve. When necessary, a targeted assessment helps identify the problem more accurately and provides additional information for choosing the most appropriate treatment approach. This allows your massage therapist to make informed decisions before the treatment begins.
Your Expectations Matter
Your reason for coming is only one part of an individual massage. It is equally important to understand how you want your session to be.
Some people prefer deeper pressure, while others want a gentler approach. Some want more time spent on certain areas of the body, while others prefer a more balanced full-body session. The pace of the massage, its overall style, and many other details can also be adjusted.
These preferences are discussed before the session and become part of your massage plan. They reflect your own vision of what your massage should be, making the entire experience even more personal and more closely aligned with your expectations.

Your Environment. Your Comfort.
Your goals and expectations are not the only things that can be personalized. The environment matters too. Lighting can range from bright to very dim, music can match your preferred style and volume, the room temperature and table heating can be adjusted, and you can choose between conversation and complete silence. These may seem like small details, but together they have a significant impact on how comfortable and enjoyable your massage feels.
Many other details can be adjusted as well. Listing every option would make this article unnecessarily long, but if something is important to you, mention it. Whenever possible, those preferences can be incorporated into your session, making your massage even more comfortable and enjoyable.
Of course, you can simply come in, lie down on the table, point to your lower back, and still receive a good massage. But if you’re looking for something truly exceptional, take an active part in creating it.
